Пятнадцатого марта две тысячи первого года в квартире известного петербуржского ювелира Брайдиса было совершено двойное убийство небывалой жестокости. Малолетнему сыну ювелира, Виталию, перерезали горло, а его бабушку, Нину Галичеву, лишили жизни тремя выстрелами в голову. Экспертиза показала, что в женщину стреляли из «браунинга» образца тысяча девятьсот шестого года. И оказалось, что этот пистолет с начала месяца был уже дважды использован при совершении убийств. Второго марта в своей квартире на Комендантском проспекте из него был застрелен курсант-подводник Санкт-Петербургского Военно-Морского института Валентин Рубашкин. И в этот же день был убит водитель такси Алексей Новиков. Почерк трёх убийств был одинаков: три выстрела в голову из одного и того же оружия. По следам, обнаруженным на местах происшествий, сыщики сделали вывод, что все преступления совершены одной и той же неизвестной вооруженной группой. В поисках возможной зацепки следствие возлагало большие надежды на обнаружение угнанной «Волги» Новикова. И вскоре сотрудники ГАИ во время рейда по Петербургским дворам нашли эту машину, брошенную на Тракторной улице с поддельными номерами. Жители близлежащих домов обратили внимание сыщиков на стоявший рядом с «Волгой» джип, появившийся во дворе одновременно с машиной такси. По словам свидетелей, около него появлялись трое подозрительных молодых людей. В салоне джипа сыщики обнаружили тело мужчины с тремя пулевыми отверстиями в голове. В него стреляли из того же самого «браунинга» калибра шесть и тридцать пять сотых миллиметра. А на следующий день в следственно-оперативную группу поступил сигнал из отделения милиции Василеостровского района. Там, на Железноводской улице, возле дома шестьдесят четыре было совершено вооруженное нападение на чемпиона России по кикбоксингу Кобу ГОРДЕЛАДЗЕ. Неизвестные пытались завладеть его машиной. В больнице из головы потерпевшего была извлечена пуля, выпущенная из того самого браунинга, о котором знала уже вся милиция Санкт-Петербурга. В случае если Горделадзе мог сказать о налётчиках хоть что-нибудь, появлялся шанс выйти на них по горячим следам. Поэтому сыщики тут же отправились на встречу с единственным потерпевшим, оставшимся в живых.

The French Suites, BWV 812--817, are six suites which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the clavier (harpsichord or clavichord) between the years of 1722 and 1725. The suites were later given the name French (first recorded usage by Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg in 1762) as a means of contrast with the English Suites (whose title is likewise a later appellation). The name was popularised by Bachs biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel, who wrote in his 1802 biography of Bach, «One usually calls them French Suites because they are written in the French manner.» This claim, however, is inaccurate: like Bachs other suites, they follow a largely Italian convention.

There is no surviving definitive manuscript of these suites, and ornamentation varies both in type and in degree across manuscripts.

Xaver Varnus plays Toccata and Fugue in D minor (edited by Mendelssohn) on the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom. Recorded live on the Opening Night of the «Berliner Internationaler Orgelsommer 2013».

At the time of its dedication in 1905, the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom was the largest in Germany, with its 7269 pipes and 113 registers, distributed across four manuals and pedals. The court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer, from Frankfurt on the Oder, created an instrument that embodied the newest technical and musical developments of German organ building at the time. In that way, the organ met the high expectations of both the organ builder and his client: in the Protestant Cathedral of the capital city, there was to be a monumental, modern, and in every way extraordinary instrument of the highest quality. The organ of the Cathedral of Berlin represents the highpoint of Sauer’s career. At the same time, it marks the end of the long development of Romantic orchestral organs, whose sound corresponds to the characteristic sound of a symphonic orchestra of that period. Today, the organ in the Cathedral of Berlin is the largest late-Romantic pneumatic action organ in the world that has survived in its original condition.

“China’s premier interpreter of Bach”, is what International Piano Magazine called Yuan Sheng. A pupil of Solomon Mikowsky (Manhattan School of Music) and notably Rosalyn Tureck, Yuan Sheng extensively studied the performance practice of Baroque music. Equally at home at the harpsichord he has an instinctive feeling for the possibilities, sonorities and touch of the instrument at hand, so that “the listener might easily have imagined the composer at the keyboard” (Boston Intelligencer).

The title is misleading: the English Suites are more ‘French’ in character than the French Suites, which are more characteristic of the Italian style. ‘By design the composer is here less learned than in his other suites,’ remarked one early biographer, ‘and has mostly used a pleasing, more predominant melody.’ Just so, and the same is true of the pair of suites BWV 818 and 819 which fall outside the collection but belong with it in terms of style. To all of them Yuan Sheng brings considered tempi and precise articulation in the mould of Tureck. To Bach at his most uncomplicated, Sheng brings the virtues of simplicity and clarity.

Again Yuan Sheng draws the listener into his highly intelligent musical discourse, vibrant and moving, speaking through the medium of a modern Steinway piano.
